More about the North Euston Hotel

It stands proud on The Esplanade at Fleetwood, on the curve of the coastline and River Wyre Estuary, close to the beach and promenade and it’s equally historic relative, the Lower Lighthouse.

It’s a fine semi-circular building and one of the oldest in Fleetwood, being built in 1841, overlooking the bay with spectacular views of Morecambe, Lancaster and the Lakes.

The hotel was built to serve overnight guests making the railway journey from Euston Station in London, and was close to the point of departure for the steamers to Scotland. At the time, there was no direct rail route from London to Scotland along the west coast. Travellers would have to alight at Fleetwood and take the sea ferry to Ardrossan and then travel by rail to Glasgow. The construction of the railway over Shap Fell in the Lake District in 1847 ended this sea/rail link and meant that Fleetwood’s role as a transport terminus was now obsolete. It had a later spell as a Barracks – eventually reverting to its original purpose.

Today the North Euston is gradually being restored to its former glory with a programme of restoration from the private family who now own it. The ground floor is given over to dining and meeting rooms with a selection of different restaurants and individual rooms to cater for every event and all taste buds.

Enter the magnificant reception area through the revolving door and step back into the history of Fleetwood. On the left is the Victoria Bar, where you can enjoy a range of snacks and meals and of course all the drinks of any great public house.

The Victoria Bar

In the Victoria Bar you can make yourself at home for a few hours to enjoy great live entertainment, or pop in for a meal – everyone is welcome.

Why not enjoy the Sunday Carvery, served from 12 to 3pm every week, only £7.95 per person, including soup of the day or a salad bar starter. At the Salad Bar you can enjoy a free starter with every main course ordered.

The Bay Restaurant

On the right hand side of the main reception as you enter the North Euston, you’ll find restaurant dining in tables for two, four, or more.

The North Euston Hotel Bay Restaurant

All dishes are cooked to order here and include the best of local produce and fresh ingredients.

You can also enjoy the Early Bird Menu which is served from 6 to 7pm, at just £12.50 for three courses.

There are also special entertainment nights in The Bay

The North Euston Hotel Bay Restaurant at Christmas

In the festive season you might want to enjoy Christmas lunch in the Bay, served from the beginning of December to early January from 12 to 2.30pm. Of course, lunch and dinner is also served in the Bay on Boxing Day and New Years Day too. Live singing, piano music and even visits from Santa are all entertainment you might expect to see in the Bay during this time of year.

Private Parties, Events and Meetings

At the North Euston Hotel, there are a series of smaller rooms off the main ground floor corridor where you can hold your own private event. That could be a lunch party, christening, wedding, business event or family meal – we can cater for anything which you require.

The North Euston Hotel Conference Room

The capacity of the rooms depends on whether your event is a business meeting where you require theatre style chairs in rows, or a meal at tables.

The Burton Suite has an approximate capacity of 40 people seated in rows, the slightly bigger Rossall Suite holds 70, the Vantini Suite holds 110 and the biggest room, the Ballroom, holds 200 seated in rows. Each room can be set out as you require, for meal settings, with U shaped tables or classroom style.

The maximum capacity of the Ballroom is 200 people – which makes it one of the largest venues in Wyre – and the smaller rooms are ideal for smaller meetings, presentations and interviews. As you would expect, all the equipment used in today’s modern professional events can be sourced and provided, including projectors, TV and video equipment, flip charts etc.

Christenings, Weddings, Funerals and Family Parties

If you are organising a family event such as a wedding, christening, funeral or special party, you can rely on the North Euston Hotel to treat you and your guests as important visitors. The Vantini and Rossall rooms are also licensed to hold civil ceremonies, which means that you can hold your wedding and reception all under one roof, with 25 to 110 guests in attendance.

Are There any Tunnels at the North Euston?

Tunnels under Fleetwood, linking the docks and seafront buildings, are much debated. Are they real or local folklore?

Hats off to everyone at the North Euston Hotel for the recent transformation of the cellars into their new, state-of-the-art gym space, which gave us an opportunity to do two things at once – take a look around and go hunting for those famous tunnels…

Local folklore has it, with regular discussion online, that in their heyday the docks at Fleetwood were connected to various buildings with tunnels that were used to transport goods and animals to and fro. There’s a similar story about tunnels under Blackpool too, but no one seems to have been able to actually find and document any of them.

In the new gym at the North Euston the shape and structure of the age old building is clear for all to see against the new floor and modern machinery designed to turn us all into trimmed and fit athletes. The stone supporting columns have been cleaned up, and the vaulted brick roof has been painted – but you can still imagine the scene that would have met the cellarman when the building was completed and opened for business in 1841 – and the meat hooks have also been left in place as a memory of the past.

The bit that I was interested in lies behind a locked faceless door in a corner – it’s what the current owners think might be the last vestiges of the tunnels.

The door opens to reveal this slightly eerie sight of a small stone arch and the bottom of a short staircase… which leads to a bricked up wall and to who knows where beyond?

Vicky Spearman, one of the family who now have custodianship of this magnificent building, tells us that they have looked for evidence of the tunnels, but in their time at the hotel no other evidence has been found, so this they assume must be it, if indeed it is a true story.

Do you have any stories handed down through your own family, or better still any photos? If you do please get in touch

North Euston Hotel, 175 Years, 1841-2016

At Easter 2016 the North Euston Hotel celebrated its 175th anniversary with a weekend of events.

North Euston Hotel Fleetwood

Opened in 1841 Fleetwood’s most prestigious hotel has a long and varied history after being designed by noted architect Decimus Burton.

On Friday March 25th the hotel was officially ‘re-opened’ in a ceremony involving the Mayor and Mayoress, Fleetwood Old Boys Band and the Warblers on T’Wyre. Events took place over the course of the Easter weekend and exhibitions were in the hotel outlining its varied history.

Over the weekend there were various acts performing at the North Euston, a vintage fashion show on Saturday 26th, tours of the hotel cellars, a vintage craft fair and on Easter Monday a Classic Car show and a George Formby Tribute.
